World Championships

The UCI Road World Championships: Montreal 2026 and the three editions before it.

The 2026 UCI Road World Championships were held in Montreal, Canada, from 20 to 27 September, dates the UCI has confirmed. Every title is decided. This page gives the Montreal results and the elite results of the three editions before it, mostly from the UCI's own reports.

Status on 22 October 2026

Montreal 2026 is finished. The UCI's closing report confirms the championships ran from 20 to 27 September 2026. That settles an earlier difference between sources: Wikipedia had given 20 to 27 September, while a search summary of a City of Montreal page had said 19 to 27 September.

Montreal 2026: the courses

The UCI gives the elite road races as 273.7 km for men and 180.4 km for women, the women's race with 2,570 m of climbing, and says both elite time trials used the same 39.2 km course from Avenue du Parc to Jeanne Mance Park (some of these distances reached us through a search summary of the UCI's pages).

Men's road race. McNulty won after riding the last 33 km alone, according to the UCI. Some news reports called him the first American to win the men's world road title in 33 years; the UCI's report does not say this and we could not confirm it, so we do not repeat it as fact.

Women's road race. Vollering beat Niewiadoma-Phinney in a sprint, and Marlen Reusser was fourth, 8 seconds down (Kuwait Times; Wikipedia). No UCI report of this race appeared in our research.

Time trials. The UCI says Evenepoel, averaging 52.4 km/h, became the first rider to win the elite time trial at four editions in a row; it was his fourth title. Reusser kept her title, and the UCI counts it as her fifth world time trial medal: two gold, two silver and one bronze.

Montreal 2026: under-23 and junior titles

  • Men's under-23 road race: Ashlin Barry (USA), alone (UCI).
  • Junior time trials, 22 September: Benjamin Noval Suarez (Spain) and Maria Okrucinska (Poland) (UCI).
  • Per Wikipedia (secondary), not confirmed on uci.org: men's under-23 time trial Ryan Gal (Netherlands); women's under-23 road race Viktoria Chladonova (Slovakia); women's under-23 time trial Felicity Wilson-Haffenden (Australia); junior men's road race Benjamin Noval (Spain); junior women's road race Alejandra Neira (Spain).

What the UCI said about these editions

  • 2025, Kigali, Rwanda: Pogacar attacked with more than 100 km to go and rode the last 77 km alone to his second title in a row. The UCI says he is the first rider to win both the Tour de France and the world road title in two consecutive years, 2024 and 2025. Healy's bronze was Ireland's first men's elite road race medal since Sean Kelly in 1989. Vallieres Mill became Canada's first elite road world champion, and Paula Ostiz won Spain's first women's junior road world title.
  • 2024, Zurich, Switzerland, held jointly with the Para-cycling Road World Championships: Pogacar's solo win, after attacking with more than 100 km left, was Slovenia's first elite rainbow jersey. The UCI says his Giro, Tour and Worlds wins that year made a "Triple Crown" achieved before only by Eddy Merckx (1974) and Stephen Roche (1987). Kopecky won her second title in a row, in rain. Grace Brown became the first rider to win the time trial at the Olympic Games and the Worlds in the same year, and a UCI headline says Australia's mixed relay win gave her a second gold.
  • 2023, Glasgow and Scotland, part of the combined UCI Cycling World Championships for all disciplines: Van der Poel won alone despite crashing with 16 km to go, and Kopecky took her first road world title.

The rules for championship road races

UCI Regulations Part 2, Road Races (version on 1 July 2025), article 2.3.002, sets distances for the World Championships and Olympic Games, subject to the course profile: 250 to 280 km for elite men, 150 to 180 km for elite women and under-23 men, 110 to 140 km for under-23 women and junior men, and 70 to 100 km for junior women. Article 2.2.002 caps the field at 200 riders. Part 2 has been amended since that version, and the later changes were not read.
