BMX

BMX origins: from Californian dirt tracks to the Olympics.

BMX began with Californian teenagers riding bicycles the way motocross riders rode motorbikes. Within about forty years it was an Olympic sport. This page follows that path through Olympedia, the UCI and the other sources in our research, including the disputed date BMX came under the UCI.

Motocross on bicycles (late 1960s)

Olympedia says BMX began in the late 1960s, when teenagers in California started riding bicycles on hilly dirt tracks, copying the style and the gear of motocross riders.

Search summaries of Wikipedia, which we could not confirm, say the Schwinn Sting-Ray was the typical early bike.

The first race (1970)

Olympedia dates the first BMX race to 14 November 1970 in Long Beach, California. It says the race was probably organised by Scot Breithaupt, then 14, who in the early 1970s also founded the first BMX governing body, which did not last long. Search summaries of Wikipedia name that body as the Bicycle United Motocross Society; unconfirmed.

The film that spread it

The film "On Any Sunday" is credited with spreading interest in BMX, but its year is given two ways: 1971 by Wikipedia and 1972 by Cycling New Zealand. We saw both only as search summaries, and the Cycling New Zealand page failed a certificate check when we tried to open it, so neither year is confirmed.

A federation and a world championship (1981 and 1982)

Olympedia says the International BMX Federation (IBMXF) was founded in 1981, and the first BMX World Championships were held the next year in Dayton, Ohio. The UCI's own explainer on BMX racing agrees that the IBMXF held the first official world championships at Dayton in 1982, although the UCI's 125th-anniversary article, below, puts the first world championships in Italy. A search summary of EcuRed places the 1982 championships in California instead; that is unconfirmed.

When did BMX join the UCI?

This is the main disagreement in BMX's history:

SourceWhat it says
UCI, 125th-anniversary articleBMX racing joined the UCI in 1985, with its first world championships in Italy
OlympediaThe FIAC, the UCI's amateur arm at the time, held its own BMX championships from 1985; the IBMXF and the FIAC staged joint world championships from 1991; the IBMXF was absorbed into the UCI in 1993; BMX received full UCI recognition in 1996
World of Sports Science, via Encyclopedia.comThe first BMX world championships were in 1993

In those years cycling was split between an amateur body, the FIAC, and a professional one, with the UCI as a liaison office, as the UCI and the governing bodies explains. The versions may describe different bodies' championships, or different steps such as the FIAC's events, the absorption of the IBMXF and full recognition. The sources do not settle it.

Freestyle

The UCI added BMX freestyle, alongside urban cycling, in 2017.

The Olympic Games

Olympedia says BMX racing made its Olympic debut at Beijing in 2008, and Encyclopedia.com's cycling page says that debut was for men and women. The UCI's explainer on BMX freestyle park says the discipline made its Olympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 Games, held in 2021. A search summary of another UCI article adds that the event was at Ariake Urban Sports Park, where Charlotte Worthington of Great Britain and Logan Martin of Australia became the first Olympic champions; we did not open that article, so those details are unconfirmed. The UCI's history of Olympic cycling calls BMX freestyle the latest addition to the programme, without a year.

At Paris 2024, the UCI records, three French riders filled the men's BMX racing podium.
